I would like to share a story with you that is typical of clients I work with. Let’s call this client Sarah.
Before Sarah came to see me, she had no serious medical issues, just a few extra pounds and a persistent feeling that her life was not where she wanted it to be. She had some digestive issues, nothing major.
What she did have was a genuine desire to focus on her health. She found herself with some extra time on her hands, and she wanted to use that time to improve her health as part of her own self-care.
Sarah did not know how to start “getting healthy”. Her diet was not that bad. She exercised-ish, sometimes, but she found it hard to stick to a gym routine. She knew she should exercise more, but she found it boring. “What else can I do?” she wondered.
She started reading weight loss blogs from people who lost weight on the Keto diet and thought maybe she should give that a go. Then she clicked another video about how Keto is terrible for your health. So, she moved on to researching the gluten-free diet because that was supposed to be good for digestive issues. Next came the veganism videos. A vegan Youtuber claimed to have quit meat cold turkey (pun intended) and never looked back.
In the veganism video comments, some people said going vegan was the best decision they ever made, but others said going vegan nearly killed them and they would not recommend it to their worst enemy. Someone mentioned that veganism is a sham unless you follow a whole foods plant-based diet. Another commenter touted the benefits of a paleo diet. “Wait, I should eat more meat?”, Sarah wondered.
On and on it went, and further down the rabbit hole she got, clicking and googling how to fix her “issues” until 3:00am! Next thing Sarah knew, she had been googling how to get healthy for 7 hours straight!
Unfortunately, despite her thorough research, Sarah still did not know which diet to pick. She tried to remember what she learned from her research and decided to go all in. She tried to cut out meat cold turkey like the Youtuber. She tried to stop eating milk and eggs and eliminate processed foods from her freezer. She even bought almond flour for all the gluten-free baking she planned to do.
Soon Sarah had no idea what to make for dinner! Her list of what not to eat grew daily. As it did, she felt more and more deprived and frustrated. Her mental health took a nosedive as she obsessed about all the “bad” foods she ended up eating when she promised herself she wouldn’t. She never even opened her expensive almond flour.
One day, Sarah went to her friend’s birthday party and had cake. She felt extremely guilty, like she had let herself down. As punishment, she forced herself to watch gruesome documentaries to inspire her to avoid “bad” food. The videos only made her fear food even more. The voices of Youtubers saying, “Don’t eat that! It could kill you!” kept Sarah up at night.
She began to feel unpleasant symptoms in her body – overwhelm, frustration, anxiety, shame and resentment. “Why can’t I be vegan like the Youtubers? Isn’t all this energy I put in supposed to make me feel better?” she thought. “If this is supposed to make me healthy, why do I feel so much worse?!”
That’s when she knew something had to change.
